Sheila Chauvet, Registered Psychologist, is the owner and founder of Stepping Forward Psychology Ltd., a private practice specializing in three main areas: supporting children, youth, and their families; offering consulting, professional development and assessments to schools and; providing Sport Psychology sessions to teams and individual athletes. Stepping Forward Psychology provides supervision in the areas of Educational Psychology and, Child and Adolescent Therapy.

Sheila holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology, a Bachelor of Education and, a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology. In addition to her work as a psychologist, Sheila has worked as a kindergarten to grade 12 teacher, a special education coordinator, a high school counsellor, a behaviour consultant and a Director of Student Services overseeing Mental Health, Wellness, Violence and Threat Assessment, Crisis Response,  Inclusion and Special Needs programming for Evergreen Catholic School Division.

Sheila taught the Master level Psychological Assessment of Children and Adolescents course at City University and has supervised numerous Provisional Psychologists, Certified Counsellors, Social Workers and Master Level practicum students. She is a trainer for: Mental Health Literacy, Violent Threat Risk Assessment and, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention. She has been trained recently in Neuro-sequential Model of Education (NME), Suicide Prevention, Traumatic Event Systems (TES), Family Systems, Critical Incident: Stress Management, Fierce Conversations, Information Sharing (GOA), Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview (ADI-R).

Sheila has offered many professional development presentations to the Alberta Teachers Association Conference, School Divisions, Municipalities, Children’s Services, Hockey Organizations and Corporate Organizations.  The following are some of the presentation titles dlivered: Psycho-Educational Testing: What does it Mean?, Understanding Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder and Strategies that Work, How To Use an Educational Assistant Effectively, Maintaining Balance and Preserving Well-Being, A High School Counsellor’s Survival Guide, True Colors Personality Inventory, 16 Personalities: How do we work together?, Art Therapy, Play Therapy, A Crisis Response Manual: What’s Important?, and Children and Adolescent  Signs and Symptoms to Pay Attention to After a Traumatic Event. 

Sheila’s therapeutic relationships are empathetic and warm. Sheila uses an integrative person-centered approach with unconditional positive regard for all. Her integrative approach is a progressive form of psychology that combines different therapeutic tools, strategies and skills to best fit the individual needs of each client, each session. Sheila utilizes techniques from: Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Mindfullness (MBCT), Impact Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy (SFBT), Art Therapy, Play Therapy, Neuro-Sequential Model (NME) and, Strength-Based Therapy. Sheila’s entire career has been supporting children, adolescents and their families at home, in the community and at school.
